The role of Plants

They are crucial in People’s Plants due to the following factors:

  • They are living beings that can be treated as psychical representations.
  • They have a wide range of characteristics to be analyzed
    • The characteristics can be analyzed from many possible angles: physical appearance, emotional interpretation, poetically, from the point of view of growth and maintenance…
    • Each session is a different experience due to the different visitors’ focus and points of view.
  • Plants are static and quiet, at least from our perception in minutes. Which makes them an object.
    • However, they are living objects.
    • That leaves absolute freedom to the visitor to interpret plants as parts of their life: People, stages of their own life, wishes, expectations.
      • Just because they are living and static.
  • They can be held (they should be in pots), which also aids the visitor to really interact with the symbols they choose.
    • There are going to be 2 plants chosen in each session and these plants are going to be important answers for the visitors.
    • They will have to confront their materialized living answers to life questions.
Which is, unique, because we, as human beings, never have the chance to observe our decisions from a non virtual point of view.

From Research

Plants have been proven to be facilitators for therapy. Mounting evidence for the mental, physical, and behavioral health benefits of exposure to nature has considerable implications for psychotherapeutic practice (Wolsko, C. and Hoyt, K., 2012).

There is a developing trend in Psychology called Ecopsychology that is showing a different range of studies that aim to discover all the benefits of nature towards human life and behaviour.

Ecopsychology seeks to reshape modern psychology by showing that it cannot stand apart from an intimate human connection with the natural environment.”
